Rain earlier in the week finally held off, making way for a beautiful sunny weekend for the 2009 Nassau County Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the Bellmore Kiwanis and Lions Clubs. The family-friendly event proved to be a fruitful fund-raiser for the community groups, since all proceeds go directly to their charitable efforts.

Families from all over Long Island came out in force to enjoy the festival held on the grounds of the Jerusalem Avenue School in North Bellmore.

The star of the show, of course, was the strawberry itself – in every form, from frozen strawberry smoothies to chocolate dipped delights. The festival also featured tasty carnival foods, such as Zeppolis, fried Oreos and ice-cream, and children’s games and rides, from the giant Ferris wheel to the toddler-sized spinning Strawberries.

New this year was a “Green Expo” featuring local energy-efficiency and renewable energy vendors, as well as a “SmartCar” raffle, and a “Craft/General Vendor” area.
