05-07-09- Kiwanis Newsletter THE KIWANIS BELL 05-07-09 Club Officers Presidents – Kevin Lyons & John Monks Vice Pres – Walt Andersen | Secretary – Seth Meyerowitz Treasurer – Charlie Capitano | Past Pres. – Bill Sette Meeting Happenings Pancake Breakfast RECAP - This year's event was a success.  Combined efforts helped raise over $3,000 to support our community.  Raffle baskets supplied by A Taste of Home Bakery as well as the TV coordinated by Kevin Lyons helped raise funds.  Our Local KEY CLUBS were in attendance offering a very helpful hand. Key Clubbers aided in serving food and beverages, clearing tables, selling raffles and more. Look for our article in the April 23rd-30th Bellmore & Merrick Heralds. We have met and will exceed our original goals for our Green Expo which is now sponsored by Allure Home Improvements. Strawberry Festival Vendors. We are looking for vendors for our Craft Fair/Business Expo at this year's Strawberry Festival.  For more information check out www.BellmoreKiwanis.org/Strawberry-Festival.html Festival Ride Sponsorship Signs - Melanie Mankita is collaborating with the Lions Club to bring in our Ride Sponsorships. Mark Meyerowitz "volunteered" to be in charge of our marketing and advertising efforts for the upcoming strawberry festival. This year we will have 3 major Radio Stations in attendance to help promote our event. Those stations are: 101.1, KJOY, and 94.3 WMJC Other sponsors include: Long Island Herald Newspapers, Built Well Solar, Allure Home Improvements, WOW Green (Cleaning Products), Infinity Windows & Doors, Renewal By Anderson (Long Island), and EmPowerCES, HOBY Award Winner – Amanda Hammerman, a sophomore at Bellmore JFK will be sponsored by the Bellmore Kiwanis.  This is a leadership training seminar. Herald Editorial - VERY EXCITING!! -  a well deserved series of articles (2-3) will be developed by Nancy Hiler of the Herald Newspapers and will focus around the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of the Bellmores performs as well as the rejuvenation of the club via its new members. Furthermore, the Meyerowitz family will have a bit of an expose chronicling their involvement in the Kiwanis as well as their interest in community service as a whole. These articles will also speak about the Kiwanis and Lions clubs upcoming Strawberry Festival and of the Kiwanis's efforts in Going Green.  Keep your eye out for what should be a GREAT few articles!! Website REVAMP - The Bellmore Kiwanis's resident "Webmaster" is at it again.  Seth Meyerowitz continues to update the club's website in a hope to provide the best experience for users and the most useful and informative Kiwanis Club site in the district. www.BellmoreKiwanis.org NEW MEMBER – Monica Tarantino of A Taste of Home Bakery was in attendance to discuss this year's bakery obligations and loved the meeting so much decided it was about time to join as an OFFICIAL MEMBER! Strawberry Festival Update: We are rocking and rolling with our Green Expo (sponsored by Alure Home Improvements) as well as our Vendors and Crafters.  We are also generating some great sponsorship dollars.  We have reached and exceeded our desired participants for the Green Expo and hope to reach at least 20 vendors for the crafter and vendor area. MAY 11, 2009 DIVISIONAL The Bellmore Kiwanis Club will be hosting a Divisional on May 11 at 6:30 pm at Antoinette's in Bellmore on Merrick Road. The cost is $24 for dinner. Key Clubbers – A happy WELCOME to Taylor Sucoff and Jordan Bortnick from the Bellmore JFK Key Club who attended tonight's meeting with Key Club Advisor Gina Mirando. Presentation by Michelle Vernon of Sunrise Day Camp Michelle gave a great presentation about the Sunrise Day Camp which is a 7 and a half week summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings.  The program seems like a really great thing and we hope to be able to support them in the future.  For more information visit www.sunrisedaycamp.org Lots of other topics were discussed and comments were made about the fundraising success this year.
